La
Guardia Airport Will Never Be the Same
Review of Fixer by C. Wilson on Amazon.com
Having read Ed Brodow's excellent work on negotiation (Negotiation
Boot Camp), I was curious to see what he could do with fiction. I was
not disappointed. Fixer is original in many ways, not the least
of which is the way the author portrays New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.
Fiorello comes off as a defensive, vindictive SOB who goes after Harry
Leonnoff, Fixer's protagonist. Harry manages to overcome poverty,
polio and anti-Semitism without being angry. He sublimates his anger into
his life's passion, helping immigrants and poor people who are victimized
by a crooked political system. I loved the way Harry's character develops
from the boy with polio to a fearless marshal and politico who is not
afraid to tackle the system. Harry eventually runs afoul of LaGuardia
and the way these characters work out their conflict, with the juicy addition
of Harry's psychotic ex-Marine brother-in-law, make Fixer a fascinating
story. As a former Marine, the author's exciting account of the Battle
of Belleau Wood was an unexpected plus. The novel is full of detail and
spice. Fixer's finish is as moving as it is surprising and it left
me wanting to re-read the whole book from the beginning.
