Modern
Day Robin Hood
Fixer reviewed by jkayesbookblog
Ed Brodow's grandfather is the inspiration of the historical fiction
story, "Fixer". About Harry, the hero, Brodow writes, "his bravery and
charisma, in conjunction with his willingness to help out other people,
made for an amazing life that calls out to be heard." After reading the
book, I whole heartily agree! He was a modern day, pistol-packing, civil
servant, Robin Hood type. The story takes place in New York City - Brooklyn
from Harry's birth in 1883 to his death in 1961. The political history
of NYC from the later days of Tammany Hall to the post WWII advent of
the modern welfare state is fascinating. Brodow's treatment of the evolution
of the politics from Tammany Hall to modern day was an unexpected bonus!
And it gives me a better understanding of political realities in 3rd world
countries.
